What You Already Have

When I was a teenager, I remember rearranging just about every room in the house. I changed the bedroom that I shared with my sister, I changed my mom’s bedroom. I even rearranged the living room.

My mom had gotten so used to me doing it that eventually, I don’t think she even cared if I asked her anymore. I don’t know what kind of strength I had as a teenager, but I was moving couches, entertainment systems, tables, and just about anything else that wasn’t nailed down.

There was something so satisfying about taking the same furniture and making a room feel  completely different.

I enjoyed seeing all the possibilities of what a room could be. And I wouldn’t stop at our house.

Whenever we went to family member’s homes, or walked into different buildings, I would mentally tear the whole place down and rebuild it in my head.

In our living room we had one of those old school coffee tables that had glass on both ends. Depending on when you were born, you know exactly what table I’m talking about.

And those glass sections always had something around the edges. Crumbs. Dust.

Then there were the crystal bowls. One might have butterscotch and peppermint candy. Another might have loose change and bobby pins, or something nobody could explain why it was in there.

And somewhere nearby was that clay looking statue of Jesus and the last supper.

That was our living room.

Long story short, I believe God had already put that passion in me.

I knew it then, I know it now.

Whenever we left the house I would have a pencil, eraser, ruler, and clipboard with paper. I was always drawing buildings, rooms, floor plans, and houses.

Later, when computers became a part of my world, I found programs and websites where I would design rooms and houses.

Today, I’m not moving my mother’s furniture anymore. I have moved plenty of my own, though.

And one thing I learned is this… you’d be surprised what you can do with what you already have.

Sometimes the chairs that you love don’t need to be replaced. They just need new fabric. Maybe the room you’re using for storage can become an office. Or maybe you have hoarder tendencies and need to declutter.

That takes me to Exodus 4:2, where God asks Moses a simple question: “What is that in your hand?”

Now, God already knew the answer. So why ask?

Because God wasn’t looking for information. He was trying to change Moses’ perspective. Moses saw a staff. Just a walking stick. Nothing that could change the world.

But God saw what Moses couldn’t see yet. God saw what that ordinary staff could become when placed in His hands.

Maybe there’s something you have that you believe is ordinary just as Moses did; an old table in storage, a chair that is missing a leg you find hard to part with. Or maybe a piece of family furniture that has been passed down and needs a bit of love.
