Prepare Your Home for Fall

Real Estate

September is a good time to start preparing your home for the seasons ahead. But don’t worry if you’re just getting around to it ... there’s still time.

As the weather changes, a few thoughtful updates can make your home feel more comfortable, functional, and ready for what’s ahead. You don’t have to tackle everything at once. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but these are a few things that can make a meaningful difference as you move into the coming seasons.

1. Inspect Your Roof & Exterior

Look for missing or damaged shingles, damaged flashing, or areas where debris has collected. Take a quick look around the exterior of your home for anything that may need attention before colder weather arrives.

2. Check for Drafts & Moisture

Check windows and doors for drafts, and replace worn weatherstripping or re-caulk gaps as needed. Also look for signs of moisture, leaks, condensation, or musty smells around windows, bathrooms, basements, and crawl spaces.

3. Get Your Heating System Ready

Replace your HVAC filter and make sure vents aren't blocked. If your system hasn't been serviced recently or you notice unusual noises, consider having it checked. You can also reverse your ceiling fans to clockwise at a low speed to help circulate warm air downward.

4. Protect Your Home From Water & Freezing Temperatures

Clean your gutters, check your downspouts, and disconnect outdoor hoses and let them drain fully. You may also want to add an Outdoor Faucet Cover to help protect your outdoor spigots as temperatures change. If you have an irrigation system, prepare it for colder temperatures as well.

5. Check Your Safety Devices & Fireplace

Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries if needed. If you use a fireplace, have your chimney checked before the season begins.

6. Prepare Your Outdoor Spaces

Clean and store summer furniture and other items you won't need during the colder months. Check outdoor faucets and take care of any remaining summer maintenance before freezing temperatures arrive.

Can you think of someone who could use a little help getting their home ready for the seasons ahead? Send this their way. Sometimes a helpful reminder is all someone needs to get started.
